Description

Using high pressure homogenizers for pesticides is critical in the agrochemical industry. Many herbicides, insecticides and fungicides contain solid aggregate granules or oil-based liquids that need to be homogenized in water. This water and aggregate mixture is then sprayed onto crops, etc. So in the agrochemical world, you are either dealing with deagglomerating solid granules and particles into liquid phases or you are dealing with the emulsification of water and pesticide oils.

In many cases, the companies that manufacture these materials must content with reducing the particle size of solids AND mixing them into a sustainable, long lasting suspension. Add to this that there may be oils that also don’t like mixing with the water and you invariably end up with a two or even three stage process. In the initial stage you may use dry grinding equipment like bead or ball mills to reduce the aggregate particle size. Then you move on to adding your water and dispersants that help the solids stay in suspension. At this point, you may encounter re-agglomeration where the solids particles start to fuse together in the liquid medium. This is a common problem. Then lastly you have to emulsify the mixture if any oils have been introduced.

A Single Process to Homogenize and Disperse Pesticides
The Sonolator is a unique homogenizing device that uses fluid acceleration and extreme cavitation to rip apart solids particles. The fluid medium, in the case of herbicides and insecticides is usually water, carries an aggregate solid in loose suspension through our mixing chamber where it is forced through a small elliptical Orifice opening . The very sharp edges of this Orifice tear apart agglomerates instantly as the fluid accelerates immediately to over 300 ft per second velocity. This rapid change in velocity cause the fluid to cavitate, further disrupting the solids and blowing apart the fused particles. Then, the high velocity stream slams into a knife-like Blade set in its path where vortices of material are violently shed off in the opposing direction of the flow, creating even more turbulence where the solids crash into each other and are forced apart.

All of the turbulence inside the mixing chamber of the Sonolator Homogenizer serves to very efficiently rip apart solids agglomerates while emulsifying any oils that might be present in the water stream as well. We can achieve micron size particles in a single pass without recirculation.
